Despite having virtually no special martial arts skills and never actually participating in combat in the series, Bulma is secretly one of the best characters in the Dragon Ball franchise.
The various characters in Dragon Ball all tend to have unique skills, which set them apart from the rest of the cast. But while most of them ultimately play the same combative role as the others, there's really only one character who brings science to the world of Dragon Ball , along with a sense of romance and adventure.
Although she has never been the focus of the anime's battles, Bulma is one of the most interesting and enjoyable characters in the Dragon Ball saga.
The call to adventure
The sense of adventure has always been at the heart of the best parts of the Dragon Ball manga. This includes the story of the entire saga, with Bulma 's adventurous nature always being at the heart of the story. She is the one who first introduced the concept of the search for the Dragon Balls . She convinces a young Goku to accompany her on his quest to find the rest of the Dragon Balls . Whenever the DBZ anime feels like a real journey instead of a series of endless battles, Bulma is at the center of the story. This continued after the first Dragon Ball (where her adventures alongside Goku led to the introduction of many of the series' most pivotal elements) and even in the large-scale conflicts of Dragon Ball Z.
Even when the fights reached a certain point/level, during which the enemies were able to deploy destructive techniques on the planet, Bulma was there and made sure to be present in the adventure. She was at the center of the search for the Dragon Balls even when she was not on Earth. She traveled across the cosmos with Krillin and Gohan, to try to find Namek . Making her one of only two humans to go to this planet to try to revive their friends killed during the events of the Saiyan Saga. She even remained on the ground during the Android Saga, helping to discover things such as the egg that once contained Cell . Within Dragon Ball Super , she remained a major player, keeping a sense of excitement in the series. She even ventured into space alongside Jaco, the Galactic Patrolman , keeping her adventurous spirit even after becoming a mother of two children: Trunks and Bra. It's always a welcome development when Bulma takes center stage and brings a sense of adventure back to the series.
The smartest
While the majority of Dragon Ball characters are primarily designed as warriors, Bulma has always stood out as the exception to the rule. The daughter of the famous Doctor Brief , Bulma inherited his great intelligence. She has been responsible for many of the huge technological achievements that have helped save the heroes over the years. She designed the Dragon Radar , which can locate the specific energy given off by the Dragon Balls . In a world where searching for the ancient magical orbs can take entire lifetimes, it is an incredibly useful tool. The fact that she figured it out as a teenager is an indicator of her intelligence. She is the Tony Stark of the Dragon Ball series, even figuring out how to pilot a spaceship so the heroes can reach Namek and try to find their Dragon Balls after the ones on Earth go missing, following Piccolo 's death.
Bulma 's vast experience with alien life and technology has also given her a wealth of knowledge that has allowed her to build other impressive creations . She's built a battle armor, designed tools to take down androids, and the version of her from Future Trunks ' timeline was able to build a time machine. All of this makes her one of the most unique characters in anime. Her inventions are constantly saving the heroes, something no other hero has ever been able to do. This also makes her a very different character from the rest of the heroes, as well as a major reason to be involved in the plot. This isn't true for other heroic characters like Chiaotzu or Yamcha , who become less important as their fighting power turns out to not be quite on par with the main Saiyans . This gives Bulma a unique and important role in the series, which helps her stand out.
Love when you least expect it
One of the most unexpected elements of the entire DBZ franchise comes from Bulma 's love life. Her desire for love has long been a part of the character. Her original intention in seeking out the Dragon Balls was to use them to wish for the perfect boyfriend in the first place. While she never got to make that wish, she eventually found a love interest in the desert bandit Yamcha . The two formed a romantic relationship that lasted until Yamaha 's death and was restored at the end of the Frieza Saga. After this moment, Future Trunks, aka Tolinks, mentioned that at one point, Yamcha ended up cheating on Bulma , which led to the end of their relationship.
It was during this time that Vegeta was training on Earth for his eventual battle with the Androids. The duo ended up experiencing and sharing a surprising chemistry, which led to the beginnings of a relationship. The pair even conceived a son, Trunks . But their relationship continued to grow throughout the series. In turn, this ultimately proved to be the thing that convinced Vegeta to let go of his fury and begin to find a level of peace. The pair even married during the time skip between the Cell Saga and the World Tournament Saga . His attempts to resist these feelings failed when he briefly became Majin Vegeta , and he ultimately sacrificed himself in an attempt to save the world - specifically to protect Bulma and their child.
By the time of Dragon Ball Super , they had a daughter named Bra and had become even more in love than ever before. He even refused to train while she was pregnant, a major adjustment to his previous personality of constantly trying to increase his power. Vegeta has even become so protective of his wife that he is willing to stand up to Beerus , the God of Destruction, when he slaps her. It is a most loving attitude, but also a most surprising one, especially coming from one of the characters who was initially intended to be the most fearsome in the series. This makes their relationship, as well as the development of it, a major part of the DBZ anime's story, and even more so than Goku 's relationship with Chi-Chi . All of this contributes to Bulma being one of the most surprising characters in the franchise.
To conclude...
One of the most popular couples in the entire Dragon Ball Z series is that of the prince of the Saiyans, Vegeta and the brilliant scientist Bulma Brief.
When you think of Bulma from Dragon Ball Z, the first thought that comes to your mind is probably that she is boring. Despite this, you have to realize that in this series and above all others, she is one of the most important characters.
