Before Kaneki reached the age of 18, we all saw this adorable teenager that we all wanted to love and protect from harm. Kaneki was very shy, a bit optimistic, but also a bookworm. He rarely set foot outside. Even when he was talking to his very close friend, Hide . He was always shy and quiet. Kaneki was not strong, nor brave. Whenever something bad happened, he would immediately take the blame and punishment for someone else's mistake. He did, however, wear a mask to hide his fear of rejection. As he became a half-ghoul, his personality began to change drastically.
He wasn't that shy or reserved, he was just scared and petrified of what he had become, not even knowing what he was. He tried to tell himself that he was still human, holding on to it as hard as he could, just so he could still feel alive and normal. As we see him constantly crying about the hardships he had to endure, we can see the instant fear and anger he has when he wants to eat humans or lose control of himself. He screams at them telling them he doesn't want to hurt them, he doesn't want to become a monster. His eyes. His eyes have been through a lot and tell us what his story and personality really is. Terror, anger, sadness, lost. The words can go on as he soon accepts the ghoul side of him.
His hair now white, we see a whole personality shift with Kaneki , accompanied by a mental illness. His alternate self . He is now colder and silent. Yet, he has become brave, strong, and protective of the people he cares about. Fear was the last thing on his mind. All he knew was that he had to work hard and be someone he really wasn't. The happy, shy Kaneki was gone . When it came to other ghouls, he didn't care about their pain like he used to. He believed that he should be hurt instead of others suffering, but he doesn't think that way anymore. He became brutal towards those close to him, letting them join Aogiri . But, he did it for a reason. Kaneki always had a soft side to himself, but when he faced an enemy, he became merciless, killing them instantly. The quote "In this world, the chain devours the weak." was something Kaneki believed in to this extent. It means he will kill his enemies without a second thought.
Over time, Kaneki is no longer Kaneki Ken . His name is now Haise Sasaki . His entire personality has turned around once again, losing all memories of Kaneki Ken. He was more devoted, loyal, and down to earth. Even though he is no longer Kaneki, he still had slight habits and hobbies like Kaneki.

Kaneki sacrificed so much for the people he loved, even if it meant he had to be cruel to them or break their hearts. Kaneki believed that he would rather be the one to suffer the pain or punishment so that those he loved would be safe and unharmed.
When it came to Touka , who was important to him, he had to protect her. Anyone who tried to hurt her would become aggressive towards the attacker. When Ayato brutally attacked her, Kaneki flew into a rage and as he was about to break his bones, he picked Touka up and held her close to him. He could have brutally killed Ayato , but he held back his anger, as he knew that if he killed him, it would hurt Touka even more. After the massive attack in the 20th Ward where Kaneki was tortured, he approached Aogiri , agreeing that he would go with them. Before leaving, he took Touka to a safe place, leaving her there. He would do anything to protect her and keep her and Anteiku safe. She begged him not to leave, to stay with her and not leave Anteiku, but he became extremely cold, leaving her in the snow. His cold attitude was only for one reason, which is that he didn't want her to follow him, to let her think that he was a bad guy, and this so that he could just protect her.
When it comes to Hinami , she would be someone he would always be attached to, whether it was Kaneki or Haise . She is like family to him. He would do anything to make her happy, as well as protect her from harm. When Hinami's mother was killed right in front of their eyes, Kaneki immediately protects Hinami from the brutal and violent attack, taking care of her as he knew that no child should see that, especially when it's their own parent. Since both of Hinami's parents were murdered, it was up to Kaneki and Touka to protect her. Kaneki became a big brother to her, making sure she was always safe and happy. As long as he was Sasaki, he knew that he had to get Hinami out of the massive fight he had with Takizawa. He knew that he had to protect her when she was trying to protect him. He didn't want her to get hurt.

After his torture, it grew to four, because I believe that after accepting the ghouls' side, the power began to grow. After a huge battle during the raid on Kanou's lab , he inherited two more, making it six. When he fought Kishou , he had eight. I believe that every fight in which Kaneki had a more intense, stronger, and more difficult opponent to defeat, another tentacle would grow, in order to defeat and take them down. This shows how one's own strength can grow after each tough and new battle he faces. In order to win, he had to become stronger and more powerful, in order to defeat them.
With his Kagune now fully developed, he began to truly train and learn how to use its true power. As he now had eight tentacles, he could control them with a range and destructive force that could shatter V14 pillars. As a Haise , he was able to control the form of his own Kagune , controlling it far better than naturally occurring ghouls.
Over time, Kaneki develops into different moves and abilities with his own body and ghoul side. He is more powerful than the average naturally occurring ghoul, as he is half-human. With superhuman speed, regeneration, strength, and endurance, he is a difficult opponent to defeat. He is a tough cookie, a fighting machine.

Kaneki Ken is someone who needs protection from the cruel world he lives in. He has become strong, tough, and protective of the people he loves and cares about: his true family. We can all see how much pain and suffering Kaneki has been through in his life.
He's a great character who deserves so much better in his life. Even when we see him change his personality and his state of mind is never the same, we can still see the old Kaneki locked inside himself, wanting to become free and especially become himself again!
One thing is for sure, Kaneki Ken , is my favorite character in the series. Everything about him is perfect, his characteristics are what I admire the most about him. As a fan of the manga, he was my favorite from the beginning. He is a character I feel close to. He is shy, sweet and a naive boy who had no one in his life. Except his best friend Hide and others. His kindness and cruel fate make him a moving and touching character.
